A+ Certification: Operating Systems

 

is designed to provide students with basic system administration

knowledge of MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.

Prerequisites: To ensure your success, we recommend you first take the following Element K course or

have equivalent knowledge:

Delivery Method: Instructor-led, group-paced, classroom-delivery learning model with structured,

hands-on activities.

Hardware/Software Requirements

One computer to act as a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain controller for a single classroom

domain. This computer's hardware must be on the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)

and meet or exceed the following specifications:

 

Pentium 133 MHz processor.

 

128 MB of RAM.

 

2 GB hard disk.

 

12x CD-ROM drive.

 

Network adapter card and cabling required for network connectivity.

 

VGA monitor.

 

3.5" high-density disk drive, if you will be starting the Windows 2000 Server or Advanced

Server setup program from the Setup boot disks.

 

Keyboard.

 

Mouse or other pointing device.

 

One computer for the instructor and each student. Each computer must be on the Windows

2000 HCL and meet or exceed the following specifications:

 

Pentium 133 MHz processor.

 

32 MB of RAM.

 

3.2 GB hard disk.

 

12x CD-ROM drive.

 

3.5" high-density disk drive.

 

Network adapter card and cabling required for network connectivity.

 

VGA monitor capable of supporting 800 x 600 resolution and 256 colors (required to run the

optional simulations provided with this course).

 

Keyboard.

 

Mouse or other pointing device.

 

Optional: sound card and speakers.

 

A single, licensed copy of Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server for the classroom Active

Directory domain controller.

 

A licensed copy of MS-DOS version 5.0 or higher for the instructor and each student.

 

A licensed copy of Windows 95 or Windows 98 for the instructor and each student.

 

A licensed copy of Windows 2000 Professional for the instructor and each student.

 

A CD-ROM copy of the Windows 2000 Professional installation files. You will share this CDROM

on the classroom server for students to observe folders and files.

 

An MS-DOS boot disk for the instructor and each student. The MS-DOS disk must be bootable

and must contain at least the format.com and fdisk.exe commands.

 

A Microsoft Network Client 3.0 for MS-DOS Installation Disk set for the instructor and each

student. You can create the Network Client Installation Disk set by using the Network Client

Administrator from the Administrative Tools menu on a Windows NT server. If you don't have a

Windows NT server, you can manually create an installation disk set by copying the files in the

Disk1 and Disk2 folders from the \\Clients\\Msclient\\Disks folder on a Windows NT 4.0 Server

CD-ROM to two disks.

 

Driver disks for the instructor and each student for their computers' network cards and CDROM

drives.

 

Five blank, high-density 3.5" disks for the instructor and each student.

 

At least one Plug and Play-compliant device and at least one legacy device. If the drivers for

these devices aren't included with Windows 95 or Windows 98 (depending on which version

you're installing during class), make sure that you have the drivers available for the students.

 

A variety of Windows 2000 Plug and Play-compliant devices for students to install in the

“Installing New Hardware” topic of the “Customizing a Windows 2000 Installation” lesson..

 

Optional: Internet connectivity, including valid IP addresses for each student to connect to the

Windows Update page in the “Adding and Removing Software and Operating System Updates”

topic of the “Customizing a Windows 2000 Installation” lesson.

 

A Windows 2000-compatible application program for students to install in the “Add and

Removing Software and Operating System Updates” topic of the “Customizing a Windows

2000 Installation” lesson.

Performance-Based Objectives

 

Install and configure MS-DOS.

 

Upgrade from MS-DOS to Windows 9x.

 

Configure networking in Windows 9x to support connectivity between Windows 9x computers

and between Windows 9x and Windows NT/Windows 2000 computers.

 

Define the components of the Windows 9x architecture.

 

Install and configure local and network printers on a Windows 9x computer.

 

Troubleshoot Windows 9x.

 

Establish a Windows 2000-based computer network.

 

Provide administrative support to the Windows 2000 startup process.

 

Identify the primary administrative tools in Windows 2000.

 

Support networking and the TCP/IP protocol in Windows 2000.

 

Configure and maintain the two different name resolution services in Windows 2000—host

name resolution and NetBIOS name resolution.

 

Customize your installation of Windows 2000.

 

Install and manage a printer in Windows 2000.

 

Manage your hard disk in Windows 2000.

 

Use Event Viewer, Performance, and Task Manager to monitor Windows 2000, and use

Windows 2000 Backup and the Emergency Repair Disk to troubleshoot Windows 2000.
