Windows NT Server 4.0 Network-Configuration,
Managing, and Troubleshooting
Course Specifications
Course number: 077533
Software Version Number: 4.0
Course length: 2 days
Course Description
Overview: We designed the Windows NT Server 4.0 Network Configuration, Managing, and
Troubleshooting course to highlight and focus on the enhancements and improvements that have become
available for Windows NT Server 4.0 since its original launch in 1996. This course contains topics
covered at various levels of the Element K Content Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 curriculum; providing a
broad set of topics at an overview level. This course will also be helpful to those preparing for the
Supporting and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0Microsoft Certified Professional exam.
Prerequisites: We recommend you have a minimum of one year of experience implementing and
administering Windows NT Server 4.0 in medium to large environments where Microsoft Windows NT
Server 4.0 as a primary network operating system.
Delivery Method: This course is designed for instructor-led, group paced classroom-delivery, providing
students with structured hands-on activities.
Hardware/Software Requirements:
Two computers for the instructor and two computers for each student lab station (with usually no more
than two students per station), each with:
•
A minimum of 24 MB of RAM (32 MB is recommended for the student stations, 48 for the
instructor station). Although Windows NT 4.0 will install on a system with only 16 MB of RAM, classroom hardware performance would be unacceptably slow.
•
800 MB or larger hard drive divided into two partitions. The first partition should use the FAT
file system and be active; The second partition should use the NTFS file system.
•
Intel 486 DX 33 processors or better (Pentium processors are strongly recommended).
•
NDIS 4.0-compliant network adapters and network cabling (32-bit network adapters are
recommended).
•
A CD-ROM drive for the instructor computer, and either CD-ROM drives for each student
computer or network access to the Windows NT Server installation files.
•
Windows NT Server 4.0 with enough per-server client access licenses for your classroom, and
DOS 6.2 or higher.
•
A copy of the CD-ROM version of Service Pack 6a and Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
•
The following downloaded files from the Microsoft Download site: dfs_v41_1386.exe,
mpri386.exe, immc.exe (v1.1a).
•
Access to a DHCP server that will be used to automatically assign IP addresses for each
classroom computer. If your classroom is on an isolated network, you can use any IP addressing scheme you like. If you are connected to any other TCP/IP-based network, such as your corporate network or the Internet, you will need to use addresses that are valid for that network. Internet access is optional.
•
A blank high-density floppy disk for each computer.
•
At least one tape drive.
•
If you will be keying along with the students, you will need a matching lab station setup as your
instructor’s equipment. Additionally, you will need an overhead projector and video projection system to display your screen output so that all of the students can view your keyboard and mouse activities.
•
Tent cards or sticky notes.
Performance-Based Objectives
Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to
evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
•
Create, manage, and administer user and group accounts.
•
Manage network resources by using file and folder permissions and the Distributed File System
(Dfs).
•
Manage domains by creating trusts and promoting, demoting and synchronizing domains.
•
Utilize the Windows NT printing process by identifying the components, using the TCP/IP print
utilities, and troubleshooting common printing problems.
•
Support and manage client systems by examining how to install network administration tools
from client workstations, using licensing utilities to manage Client Access Licences (CALs), and using System Policies to manage registry settings on client computers.
•
Monitor and optimize your network's performance using Performance Monitor and other
network monitoring tools; modifying virtual memory settings; and creating and maintaining an Emergency Repair Disk.
•
Plan and implement audit policies, install and use the Security Configuration Manager (SCM),
and discuss advance security options such as cryptography and SMB Signing.
•
Maintain your Windows NT 4.0 system by applying the most current Service Pack, and
developing and applying backup and fault-tolerance strategies.
•
Manage and configure Microsoft networking services such as TCP/IP, DHCP Server; and name
resolution services such as WINS and DNS.
•
Utilize Internet and intranet technologies available for Windows NT 4.0 by installing and
examining Internet Information Server 4.0.
•
Discuss the components of dial-up connectivity, install and examine the Routing and Remote
Access Service for Windows NT 4.0, and discuss security and troubleshooting for remote access.
